When Alastair Woodcock, Head of Physical Education and Sport, first introduced The EverLearner to Thurstable School, qualification PE looked very different.

Their department was managing different specifications, resources and teaching materials for GCSE PE, BTEC Sport at Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, and A-Level PE students, all while trying to keep learning consistent.

They were also relying heavily on paper-based resources as there were very few online platforms dedicated specifically to PE.

What Alastair and his team wanted was streamlined support for every qualification that also reduced time searching for teaching resources they needed.

Supporting students through every PE curriculum change

Thurstable School’s PE curriculum has considerably changed, moving between GCSE PE and different BTEC Sport qualifications. More recently, the closure of its Sixth Form meant it no longer delivered A-Level PE or Key Stage 5 BTEC.

However, the PE department continued to embed the platform throughout its Key Stage 4 BTEC Sport programme, particularly as students prepare for their external assessments.

• Sometimes PE lessons begin with a video before students complete test quiz questions.
• In other lessons, PE theory is taught in class first, before videos and quizzes are assigned as homework to reinforce learning afterwards.

This also meant that preparing resources each year required significant planning time and a substantial departmental budget:

• Students wrote directly into revision guides, meaning new books had to be purchased every year.
• Teachers spent hours physically repurposing past exam papers.

By using The EverLearner’s digital, online resources, this transformed that process for both teachers and students, as it enabled the PE department to easily update their resources centrally. As a result, their students always had access to the latest content, and PE teachers could focus more on teaching and application of theory content.
